Right now, palm vein scanner cameras are expensive and not built into smartphones or regular POS machines.

๐Ÿ’ก We need hardware companies + smartphone makers to embed IR palm scanners natively, just like fingerprint readers today.

Until then, only dedicated terminals (like Five’s devices) can handle this tech.


2. ๐Ÿ” Security Concerns

Some might ask: โ€œWhat if someone just scans my palm without my knowledge?โ€

Good question! Hereโ€™s the good news:

  • Palm vein patterns are internally located (beneath skin)

  • They require active blood flow to validate (you must be alive!)

  • Extremely hard to spoof, unlike fingerprints or photos

So yeah, itโ€™s secure, but we still need protocols to avoid stealth scans in public places.

As a dev, I couldnโ€™t wait for hardware companies โ€” so Iโ€™ve started building a palm payment prototype myself.

๐Ÿ” What Iโ€™m Doing:

  • Using regular phone camera + OpenCV for palm image recognition

  • Creating a dummy payment simulation app

  • Testing speed, accuracy, and usability

  • Exploring if SDKs like MediaPipe or custom ML can support palm detection without IR
